    The Lighthouse Club International Design for Safety Award
    What is it for?

    In recognition of the construction industry designer/design team that has contributed the most by design, to eliminating, reducing and mitigating the health and safety risks during construction, cleaning and operation, maintenance and eventual modification/removal of the asset.

    Who can enter?

    Team (maximum of 6 people) or Individual architectural and engineering designers employed by architects, engineering consultants or contractors in the construction industry; and

    Individuals or Team Leaders to be a holder of a relevant construction industry degree in architecture or civil or structural engineering, recognised by the RIBA, HKIA, HKIE, ICE or other similar national institution.

    Entry requirements:

    The design was for a real life requirement in the built environment (permanent or temporary works) that was commissioned by a client for architectural or engineering design services for which the entrants’ employer was engaged.

    The prime consideration for the award is the evidence provided for the thought process in addressing whole life cycle health and safety issues at the design stage.

    Submission requirements:

    • All entries to be produced in English language.
    • One introductory side/cover sheet of A4 size, including Name of Individual/Team Leader, Title, Qualification(s), Employer, Project Name with brief description and image of design/asset. For teams, list other team member names. List up to 10 key decisions taken in the design process to eliminate and mitigate the health and safety risks for construction and future owners of the asset; plus:
    • Maximum of 20No. Drawings at A3 size & 20No. supporting pages A4 size (1 side = 1 page)
    • Font size of 11, minimum. Judging is based on quality of content, not quantity.
    • Submissions should demonstrate the design decisions made to eliminate or mitigate the whole life
      cycle health and safety risks for the asset that has been designed and how residual risks have been
      brought to the attention of the contractor/asset owner/operator as appropriate. Evidence may include project documents including drawings, risk registers, risk workshop output, minutes of design meetings, etc.
    • Level of detail provided should be proportionate to the risk and complexity.

    Confidentiality, copyright and verification:

    • Entrants are responsible for obtaining any necessary written consents from their employers, clients and relevant third parties as necessary to use the materials in their submissions for entry into this
      competition
    • Entrants’ employers and clients may be contacted for verification purposes.
    • LHC will use the entrants’ submissions solely for the purposes of this competition only and will not issue such information to third parties. LHC may publish the information provided in the introduction in the LHC magazine along with photos of the prize winners and judges commentary.
    • LHC will destroy all submissions after the results of the competition awards.

    Please note that the top 5 entrants may be invited for an interview with the judges (for entrants outside of Hong Kong, this may be via video-link). If invited, interviews will take place in late February/early March 2018.

    Entrants to be available for award ceremony at the LHC International Cocktail reception and Safety Leadership Awards at the Garden Lounge, Hong Kong Club, 1 Jackson Road, Central, Hong Kong on 16th March 2018; for teams, minimum of Team Leader to be available.
